Post Titled: wikipedia definition of "friendship"

HERE- quite an emotional rollercoaster... I only post this because there is a definite difference (which I encounter regularly) between the German and American uses of the word "friend"- namely that Americans use it quite often to refer to people they know or hang out with, Germans use it only rarely.

Post Titled: Múm "They Made Frogs Smoke Til They Exploded" video and "When Bikers Collide"
icelanders!

I like Múm. They opened for Sigur Ros. I also liked the code 46 soundtrack, by the free association, which was like Sigur Ros-meets-Röyksopp. hmm, move- full of interesting things, but not the best movie by any means.
OK OK OK-
This morning, in a rush, (I thought I was late- in reality I was early) to work- bikeriding on Hallesches Ufer by the baustelle I collided with a bike-racer-looking guy who came out of nowhere from a perpindicular sidewalk, not looking before entereing the bike lane AND der Typ was eating a large powder-puff pastry. We collided at a 45 degree angle so that our handlebars overlapped and locked. Stopping, we just looked at one another, he actually had a look on his face as if I had just murdered his dog in cold blood, which was silly because there was vanilla pudding and powdered sugar on his face. I laughed at the situation, trying to point out that it was a silly accident but he was having none of it. Just stared a shocked and angry pastry stare. "Ach, Freitag! ja- Guten Morgen-!" I said, unlocking handlebars and riding off as he just stood there still looking pissed.
5 minutes later I realised that my hand and gearshift were coverd in pudding and powder. gross.

The Mozilla Store is open, just in-time for back to school. Ok, so, admittedly- I did get a litle bit exicted about this...

Several years ago, just days after Firefox's original release, we saw a fat 5th grader in Seattle wearing a shirt with the Firefox logo on it -
"Whoa, that guy has a firefox shirt?!"
"what's that?" I said
"It's a web browser like internet explorer, but better."
"Oh." (store in back of mind)
Looking back- it now seems pretty cool that that kid had a Firefox shirt. He was a dork ahead of his time, apparently. A kind of cutting-edge dork.

Post Titled: Awh Blaw Anglaise?

Watching CODE 46 (Samantha Morton, TIm Robbins) last night I was so confused about having difficulty understanding the english language... then I realised that they aren't really speaking 100% english, it is more like 80% english and 20% whatever other language- like THIS: World English from commsoffensive325 blog:
"World English is amazing to watch, and downright humbling to experience at times. It is both a language (English as spoken by accomplished non-native speakers), and an environment (where non-native speakers address each other in English even without native speakers in the conversation).

For those of us who have been formed in Anglo American environments, the laws of grammar are viewed as sacred, and for communicators, conscious or unconscious deviations from the laws of spelling, grammar and punctuation are often severely punished and can undermine a professional’s credibility. But in a World English environment, where non-native speakers can often communicate very effectively by combining English vocabulary with some grammatical tics from their native tongues, the use of such tics in written communication presents an interesting dilemma"

When Bloggers Attack

As a general rule, it might be wise for all employers to treat their employees with respect and honor their promises/contracts, lest those employees be bloggers or those who know the internet pretty damn well, thus giving them a particular leverage and the ability to quickly spread the truth of matters to a very broad audience of current and potential clients and employees.

Alright, having said that we can get back to the irregularly sceduled madness that is the 21st century.

mmh,ok. so- z.b. when I first joined MySpace in early 2005 it initially didn't really occur to my naieve-social-media-and-blogger-rookie-self that maybe famous or semi-famous people might have fake profiles created for them. After a few weeks I was able to sniff these out and more or less esily identify a fraud, BUT, dear readers- today I came across OBAMA Girl's typepad blog and I am (british accent) positively baffled (/british accent) as to wheter it is real or not, SO could you please have a look adn let me know what you think??:

OBAMA GIRL

yes I am a dork and I already commented. and yes, if this is read by the bloggers of Obama Girl please validate/justify/clarify, etc.

"From the newspaper Libération in France:
Andrew Keen accuses the Internet of killing culture
In an interview conducted by Frédérique Roussel, Andrew Keen, a British blogger and author of 'The Cult of the Amateur', denounces the absence of ethics on the Internet. "When I look a the Web, I mainly see cultural and ethical chaos. I note the insidious theft of intellectual property, plagiarism, hardcore pornography, unrelenting spams and intellectual inanity. ... Amateur ethics are so dominant that expertise, talent and knowledge are loosing ground. Superficial political analyses, pathetic videos, unreadable novels. The internet today is like a state of nature closer to Hobbes than to Rousseau, where human behaviour is blossoming without any social rules or regulations. Anarchy. ... The Web 2.0 is killing our culture, taking over our economy and destroying our codes of conduct. All this because of a utopian faith in technological information ." (22/08/2007)

Ok - perhaps it is a bit perverse, (and I hope none of my readers are losing money), but I LOVE it when the stock market dives... and dives...

The Guardian:
"Shares in London plummeted this morning, sending the FTSE 100 index crashing back below the 6,000 level as the storm engulfing global stock markets intensified."

Wall Street Journal:
"TOKYO -- Asian stocks fell sharply Thursday, battered by persistent jitters over U.S. housing-loan problems and their possible damage to global financial markets."
"Hopes and fears about the next moves from the Federal Reserve retook center stage Wednesday, as the market continued to be whipsawed by uncertainty and volatility.
Stocks continued their roller-coaster ride through much of the session, but took a dive in the midafternoon that sent the major indexes down more than 1% each."

Bloomberg: "Global Stocks Tumble; Deutsche Bank, BHP, Macquarie Bank Fall -Aug. 16- Stocks in Europe and Asia tumbled and U.S. index futures dropped as concern deepened a global credit crunch will sap earnings and erode economic growth."

Huffpo:
"The market traded nervously, jerking the Dow Jones industrial average above and below the 13,000 mark throughout the day as investors wrestled with reports about potential trouble at Countrywide Financial Corp. and KKR Financial Holdings LLC.
By late in the day, investors saw little reason to buy beyond the fact that stocks are at bargain prices right now, and the Dow closed down nearly 170 points. The Standard & Poor's 500 index also dropped sharply, and is now down for the year."

This from WSJ: U.S. to Expand Domestic Use Of Spy Satellites
By ROBERT BLOCK
"The U.S.'s top intelligence official has greatly expanded the range of federal and local authorities who can get access to information from the nation's vast network of spy satellites in the U.S.

The decision, made three months ago by Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell, places for the first time some of the U.S.'s most powerful intelligence-gathering tools at the disposal of domestic security officials. The move was authorized in a May 25 memo sent to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff asking his department to facilitate access to the spy network on behalf of civilian agencies and law enforcement."

Normally I wouldn't post such self-righteous propaganda as what is about to follow, bu I came across a post in Technorati which lead me to the site of A1-Labs- offering a wide range of services - many of which invade one's personal life and most of which seem way too sci-fi, particualy the drug testing
A1-Labs site: HERE
grrr.
I had to take a drug test (and passed) a few years back - it is just insulting and should probably be as illegal as a breach of Civil Liberties- right?... I mean, the rights of the employer to hire good hardworking people is all well and good, but there are some fundamental flaws with this practice...to name a few:

Pot stays about 30 to 40 days if you smoke everyday then quit, but it stays in your fat cells (and therefore urine) for anywhere from 3 weeks - 3 months.
coke stays about 2 to 3 days
opiate pain pills and some other prescription narcotics last in your system for 4-6 hours and the metabolized chemical precursors (which are what actually show up on drug tests)are gone after 2-5 days. with the exception of DXM,
OTC drugs dont show up at all on tests.
nicotine stays in your system for 14 days,
alcohol for 4-6 hours.
acid never leaves your body and stays in your spinal fluid (not urine).
ecstacy lasts up to a week.
mushrooms dont show up on regular tests.

On that note: I have actually met US Soldiers who specifically use drugs that are not detected by the drug tests which they are subject to- which are actually drugs far more disorienting and dangerous that pot (which is, I assume, the most commonly tested-for drug) and these guys were charged with guarding nuclear facilities- nuts.

Post Titled: Blackface

Soo, I am in an American Business-related Yahoo Group and this (first message) gets posted and causes outrage all around, images to which it refers are insterted throughout, and -I mean, in a way I see the intention- but it is kinda fucked up:

"This is an actual ad-campaign by UNICEF Germany!
This campaign is "blackfacing" white children with mud to pose as
"uneducated africans".
The headline translates "This Ad-campaign developped pro bono by the
agency Jung von Matt/Alster shows four german kids who appeal for
solidarity with their contemporaries in Afrika"
The first kid says:
"I'm waiting for my last day in school, the children in africa still
for their first one."

second kid:
"in africa, many kids would be glad to worry about school"
third kid:
"in africa, kids don't come to school late, but not at all" (!)
fourth kid:
"some teachers suck. no teachers sucks even more."
Besides claiming that every single person in "Africa" isn't educated,
and doing so in an extremely patronising way, it is also disturbing
that this organisation thinks blackfacing kids with mud (!) equals
"relating to african children". Also, the kids' statements ignore the
existence of millions of african academics and regular people and one
again reduces a whole continent to a village of muddy uneducated
uncivilized people who need to be educated (probably by any random
westerner). This a really sad regression.
Bottom lines of this campaign are: Black = mud = African = uneducated.
White = educated. We feel this campaign might do just as much harm as
it does any good. You don't collect money for helping people by
humiliating and trivializing them first.
Unfortunately, if it was clear to the average German that this is
wrong, UNICEF and the advertising agency wouldn't come out with such a
campaign.
Please write your opinion and help make clear and explain why it is
wrong to use "blackface with mud", and write to UNICEF at
publicrelations@unicef.de as well as the advertising agency at
info@jvm.de with a copy to Black German media-watch-orgaiztion
info@derbraunemob.de what you feel about this campaign and why. Please
include a line that you're going to publish your mail and the response.
by the way, the slogan of the advertising agency who came up with
this, reads "we communicate on eye-level".

sincerely,

Noah "

HERE ARE A FEW RESPONSES FROM GROUP MEMBERS:

"The ad is in appallingly bad taste and does lead to a negative
stereotype that does more harm than good. It's kinda like those "inner
city" stereotypes, glossily painting everyone who lives within the
city limits as poor, black, uneducated and criminals. This mindset
contributes more to the "us versus them" social and racial divide
prevalent in this country than to generate any sympathy for people in
need of support and services.

This should be yet another case study for the need of diversity within
the field of advertising/public relations. There is no way anything
other than a room full of white Europeans could come up with this ad
-- AND think that it was a good idea."

"While in Barcelona last fall, I bought a bag of chocolate-covered
peanuts, not because I was hungry, but because the figure on the front
of the bag staring back at me with a mile-wide smile and a thumbs-up
was nothing less than a cartoon baby in blackface. I could not
*believe* what I was seeing, but when I later showed it to my fellow
travellers - a Finn, an Aussie, and even a Canadian - no one understood
what the big deal was. I mean, they didn't even flinch. As soon as I
got back to my school and showed the bag to my American roommates
though, their jaws dropped just like mine had.

The point of my little anecdote? That I have found firsthand just how
hyper-sensitive we Americans can be when it comes to racial images.
It's completely understandable given our nation's history - but I do
think we're unique in that sense. Others around the world have an
entirely differently viewpoint on what is right or wrong in this arena.
And that's where ad campaigns like this come from. We gasp, the "white
europeans" think they've had a brilliant idea and trot off to celebrate
at the discothek.

To be crystal clear, I'm not saying I support the ads, (or have
anything against the discothek), I just thought I'd weigh in on why I
personally am not surprised to see something like this come out of
western Europe."

"Personally I find the ad appalling but it is also an ad designed for a
totally different culture than we have here in the US. I think
Americans in general would be shocked at the number of these kinds of
ads and mindsets that are commonplace in other countries.

So while we can debate it, we were never intended to be the target
consumer audience of the ad."

SLIGHTLY ANNOYED AS USUAL I ADDED MY 2 CENTS:

"So, keep in mind that Europeans do not undergo the same types of sensitity training and PC indoctrination that Americans do. Our knee-jerk reactions on how we should feel about blackface are not theirs. Not to mention that most places in Europe just simply lack the types of ethnic diversity that is found the the US, so racial sensitivity is somewhat of a non-issue, and therefore many views that Europeans may have are what we, with our American PC values, would label blatantly "racist"...
Furthermore, Americans have their African slave and Native American burdens of guilt and Germans have their Jewish guilt burdens- so it is a different focus, different touchy subjects.

I find Americans to be "Hyper sensitive" as you put it and simultaneously hyper-insensitive, particularly in their comedy-
there are many things that simply blow the European mind which are commonplace in American comedy.
So, there, after many years in Europe, that is my in-a-nutshell analysis."

Post Titled: Separation of life and blog...
Post Sub-Titled: Humans are animals which are subject to feelings both good and bad... a strength?

Indeed, where? Helen- where? hmm. separation of blog and life. anonymity and -uhm, just "ymity"
Sappy intro: In the evolution of this blog (or int eh 2 years I have been blogging) I have moved (evermore) towards a non-personal blog, although admittedly... upon its inception- it was once entirely personal "my day, my thoughs, yadda-yadda)... which can actually in real-life can/should be journaled about with pen and paper and (probably not)not shared with the whole wide world...

Z.B.: I had a really nice long meet/talk last night with lovely folks, but that is really just kind of our business... no good reason to blog about it, can't it just exist as nice experience?- however the gremlin /imp topics will continue... to be like ohrwurme.

A dilemma.

on that note-
Mopey Personal anecdote: I was very tired and upset on Monday after work so I decided to go see the Simpsons Movie to get my mind off things. Logical, right?
Alas, Alexanderplatz only had it dubbed and I'll/'d be damned if I was going to ride back all the way to Potsdamer Platz OR see it dubbed, (note, dubbed movies are automatically comedy, oder?) so I just went to the large media store "Saturn" instead to look at things... I think I looked there for over an hour, listeded to various CDs and searching desparately for something inexpensive but good...
that daft punk cd I lost years ago but was really good so I should replace it for €8.99, uhm- no
one of those sufjan stevens albums I haven't heard (of) for €16.99-
uh, no. but Welcome to Michigan was a contender at €10.99
Tiny Vipers album for €17.99- huh??? that is almost $25!
Tiny Vipers is a seattle girl who plays nice music. Saw her (err-them) open for Michael Vermillion last september at the Mars Bar and never expected to see their CD in a huge media store in Berlin- micro macro confusion there... anyhow:
Tiny Vipers bad quality: at Oliviodoce
Tiny Vipers good quality: HERE
ANyhow, I looked and looked and looked adn found a T.Rex Best of completely bootlegged-looking cd for €2.99. I think someone make the cover in Microsoft Paint... but it has 22 songs on it...
out on Alexanderplatz I saw a woman who looked so much like my ex-aunt that I just stood and stared for several minutes trying to decide if it was her or not- 12 years without having seen someone will do that... she was whispering with another woman so I donät know what language they were speaking... then she walked off and dissappeared.
I was confronted by a drunken painter who talked to me for 25 minutes. I nodded adn listened, he was very quietly upset that the world did not like is artwork. Named Frank Zopat. if he isn't on the internet, then he is now.

outside the U/S-Bahnhof I passed a large loud group of German workers withs pickets and banners protesting, yelling on megaphones... calling for the instatement of30-hour work-weeks... still in a foul venomous mood I just thought "you naieve greedy little beer-bellied men, if only you knew how good life is for you... the world gave Germany a second chance -TWICE- in the 20th centrury after it had inflicted great pain and suffering on others (people and nations), and now, after all that, you still -somehow- have managed to come out with some of the best quality of life on the planet... and now you want a 30 hour work week with full pay and benefits. Seriously, go fuck yourseles." not to mention if Germany wants to continue to thrive in the next century then it should probably consider instating a 50-60+ hour work week, not 30." I occasioally mention to Nadine that Germany is spoiled, and sometimes I truly believe that it is- another small example that students here are studying well into their mid-to-late 20's... whereas most Americans are tossed out into the work force at 22, ok ok ok -so we are all lazy and spoiled im vergleich to the rest of the world-
and to be fair there are many unfair un-utopian practices around here - i.e. the class educational segregation in Germany, the binding "berufliche" the lack of chance for mobility in the job market - not that I know all that much about these things... agh, half-assed arguments. Eternal Question: am I more annoyed with Germnay or are the Germans more annoyed with Germany, because the Germas often seem super-annoyed with Germany... whatever, it is still dozens of times more tolerable than the States (with the exception of a few special nodes)

biked back to Kreuzberg- went and made music with Paul and Jesi- that helped calm me downa LOT, we used every non-instrument instrument possible, I believe the resulting recordings are now called dots and feathers

rode bike home, couldn't sleep with Gremlins in the brain, nadine helped talk me out of it...

On Music:
a week ago I stopped carying around Nadine's iPod because - well- now I have half a dozen songs still stuck in my head. .. uh, conclusion: brain can also be an iPod.

on other music:

I came across this list from Oprah on CNN - because it is big news- and was pretty horrified that you youldn't already KNOW these things about someone you were planning to marry... normally I wouldn't bother to complain about the Oprah-tardation effect on American society, but this is just sooo painfully disgusting, THESE QUESSSSTIONS

OPRAH's QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU GET MARRIED:

Question 7:
If one of us doesn't want to work, under what circumstances, if any, would that be okay?

NOTE: THis question pretty much assumes that both people must work and it would be wrong if one of them did not... uhm... ass of u and me.

Question 8:
How ambitious are you? Are we comfortable with the other's level of ambition?
Imagine: "Honey, I'm just comfortable with your level of ambition."

Question 11:
Do we eat meals together? Which ones? Who is responsible for the food shopping? Who prepares the meals? Who cleans up afterward?

Question 13:
What place does the other's family play in our family life? How often do we visit or socialize together? If we have out-of-town relatives, will we ask them to visit us for extended periods? How often?

Question 14:
If we have children, what kind of relationship do we hope our parents will have with their grandchildren? How much time will they spend together?

Question 16:
How will having a child change the way we live now? Will we want to take time off from work, or work a reduced schedule? For how long? Will we need to rethink who is responsible for housekeeping?

Question 18:
What are my partner's needs for cultivating or maintaining friendships outside our relationship? Is it easy for me to support those needs, or do they bother me in any way?

OK: Is it just me? Or does Oprah's list just suck every bit of joy outtta life and make me want to die... it also reeks of East coast... Bed, Bath, and Beyond Purgatory... reeks... (sorry if I am offendig readers on the East Coast but sometimes (remembering) the inhumnanity of it just makes me a bit ill)...

LOLLAPALOOZA WEBCAST: SPONSORED/CENSORED BY AT&T?
08.08.07

After concluding our Sunday night show at Lollapalooza, fans informed us that portions of that performance were missing and may have been censored by AT&T during the "Blue Room" Live Lollapalooza Webcast.

When asked about the missing performance, AT&T informed Lollapalooza that portions of the show were in fact missing from the webcast, and that their content monitor had made a mistake in cutting them.

During the performance of "Daughter" the following lyrics were sung to the tune of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" but were cut from the webcast: "George Bush, leave this world alone."

This story, which had a bit of prominence in the Euro-media was a bit harder to find this in US news:
DENVER — A Colorado congressman told a radio show host that the U.S. could "take out" Islamic holy sites if Muslim fundamentalist terrorists attacked the country with nuclear weapons.

Rep. Tom Tancredo (search) made his remarks Friday on WFLA-AM in Orlando, Fla. His spokesman stressed he was only speaking hypothetically.

Talk show host Pat Campbell (search) asked the Littleton Republican how the country should respond if terrorists struck several U.S. cities with nuclear weapons.

"Well, what if you said something like — if this happens in the United States, and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, you know, you could take out their holy sites," Tancredo answered.

"You're talking about bombing Mecca," Campbell said.

"Yeah," Tancredo responded.

The congressman later said he was "just throwing out some ideas" and that an "ultimate threat" might have to be met with an "ultimate response."

that was taken from FOX NEWS.

Post Titled: other side of the world.

This morning while, google-scouring the internet for interesting things, I randomly came across this report about sailing to French Polynesia- sprinkled with history, fun quick read.
Where is this in the world?... south pacific... uhm...

Oh sh*t- this just in: GOOGLEPHONE prototype.
In other important news I was very dissapointed to learn that Princess Leia is a LIAR. Buckling under pressure:
"No! Alderaan is peaceful. We have no weapons! You can't possibly...!"
"You would prefer another target? A military target? Then name the system!"

On Wikipedia's Alderaan page: "Despite her protests of Alderaan being a peaceful world with no weapons, the film's novelization states that the planet had armaments as strong as any ..."
then again, -Carrie Fisher claims to have been so effed-up on drugs while filming that movie she probably wouldn't remember/would've said just about anything.

THIS TIME MAGAZINE ARTICLE "Who's Really Participating in Web 2.0" is calling you a sheep, what are you going to do about that?:
"But the latest data on Internet participation reveals that only a very small percentage of Internet activity is related to users creating and publishing content. The 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, states that 80% of all consequences stem from 20% of the causes. If true, the rule would then suggest that 80% of this new form of content is created by 20% of the users. The rule, subject of countless business books, has no application when it comes to consumer-generated content. Far less than 1% of visits to most sites that thrive on user-created materials are attributable as participatory, the remaining 99% are passive visits. According to Hitwise, only 0.2% of visits to YouTube are users uploading a video, 0.05% visits to Google Video include uploaded videos and 0.16% of Flickr visits are people posting photos. Only the social encyclopedia Wikipedia shows a significant amount of participation, with 4.56% of visits to the site resulting in content editing."
surprising, since it takes longer to edit wikipedia than upload photos...

There is an Aerosmith album that has half a dozen nipples - like, cut-outs on the cd, like a collage. So, in that case, it it can't be proven whether a nipple is male or female and male nipples are allowed to be shown but not female nipples... uhm, well, paradox.. then there is the matter of the third nipple.

Post SUbtitled: Hey Hey Hey
PRELUDE:
Found Juggernaut vs. Fat Albert

MAIN POST:
I woke up, went to the desk in the bay window of the "Project Room" and thought

1. If projected rates of obesity are on the rise as studies claim they are so that in ten years
most Americans will be overweight, will elementary kids start making fun of the skinny kid in class?

This thought was brought on because I have listened to Wu_Tang's 36 Chambers at least once a day 6 days per week for the past month and I am not getting sick of it, but anyhow in Method Man's
song there is the line
"Hey-Hey-Hey, it's FAAAAT Albert!"
And I remembered watching that show in the early 1980s when there was only ONE fat kid per elementary class, and that kid kind of had their own thing going on- like, that was a central part of their being, but if soon we have a situation where most kids are fat then it just won't be special and that will
be kind of sad.
Like my punctuality, if I am on-time every day to work then it just isn't special.

Ok, it is too nice outside, mustgo.
