According to the NYT, he'd gone off depression meds because of side effects, the depression came back so he tried others, had been hospitalized a few times, underwent electroconvulsive therapy, couldn't take it any more.
ah, -that is really too bad then. Jea, I didn't read until later that he has suffered from depression for 20+ years...
