Peres Projects Berlin has a good show up
Henry Taylor and Michele O'Marah (video)
Repeat after me: I AM a Revolutionary there is a strange instructional video of girls dancing in 80s sort of leotards, pretty great. Paintings and paper-punch-out text images are good as well, definitely took a lot of time and patience. Overall, it is a show which is a teensy bit nihilistic with work that really beams a wee bit of insanity rather than hope, meaning or resolution, (but what else do you expect coming out of the united states, -or the human world- these days now, really?) I want to go back ans spend a bit more time with the work, actually... mhh,.
Henry Taylor it just the most charming and crazy &$§"er%/§%$er you could possibly meet. He quickly overwhelms the senses with his personality. Damn. Good man. I miss that kind of American stuff sometimes. He was talking about how strange it was to be here because his brother died in Germany after being shot on his birthday in Vietnam, recovering, and re-joining the military...

Post Titled: waking up in Loserland...
really odd, ok, so I rarely if EVER hear Germans say that they ever like (or love) their country- but then something happens like yesterday when they played Spain in the final game of the euro cup and it is really nice to see the flags and the flag-facepaint and whatnot, BUT yesterday while biking in Prenzlauerberg I found 2 flags on the street! Real cloth German flags! People just going by, doing nothing-... The first flag I found was just on the sidewalk, sitting there -still very clean- in a lonely little pile- while pedestrians and bikers just passed-by. I picked him up and put him in my bag. An hour later on Prenzlauer Allee I found another flag in the street, slightly dirty and battered- but I picked him up, too. BUT, this one as well as the one I saw in the dusty path on the ufer were BOTH passed-over by a LOT of foot traffic. I think my issue is: WHO THE %$§# CAN JUST SEE THEIR COUNTRY'S FLAG LYING ON THE GROUND (MUCH LESS IN THE DIRT OR IN THE STREET) AND JUST WALK BY WITHOUT PICKING IT UP AND BRUSHING IT OFF??? Taking it home to wash it, at least? I mean, I am definitely definitely not the hugest patriot, not by a long-shot, but -God forbid- if I EVER saw the American flag on the ground I would certainly pick it up and take it home instead of just running over it or driving by it... Jesus. This really says something... simply boggles the mind.
Anyhow, the third flag I found this morning: I was in much too much of a rush to get to work to stop to get it, (and since I saved 2 of them yesterday I thought I might give someone else the change to redeem themselves) but... if things keep going the way they seem to be going... maybe I can retrieve it on the way home this evening... ;(
we shallllll see.
Ok, one more thing while Iäm somewhat on-topic, let's briefly bemoan the near-complete lack of optimism. Every German I spoke to in the days before the game was saying "Spain will win. Germany doesn't have a chance." huh? seriously? that is... not exactly a winning attitude, folks. After the game a woman said "Not too bad. It is good that it was only 1-0, I was expecting 3 or 4-0..."
oh... boy oh boy.

my friend an colleague and unofficially the behind-the-scenes contributor to this blog (because of all the crazy sh+t he sends me), Dan of Berlinoir and Pulpable, is leaving Berlin! (what will the blog be called now? Bostonoir?) So, I felt the need to design a t-shirt for to send him off with. The "Denk Tank" was what we started calling our cluster at work- originally I had named it the "Engwisch FinkTank" but then some of the English-only speakers left and some English-German speakers arrived, the name changed to "Denglisch DenkTank" which was then abbreviated to "DENK TANK." Why am I wearing a 4-foot tall feathered topless can-can dancer's hat? Because I found it on the internet... (click on above image to enlarge)
best of luck in your new life in the New World, Dan! your mild-mannered witticism will be missed.

Post Titled:
YOU CAN NEVER GO HOME AGAIN.

(blog has been a bit skipmy lately because I have been busy preparing for this show, come if you can!)

"Hello friends, Berliners, artists,

Joint Custody Project Berlin:
You Can Never Go Home Again

Presented in association with Found Gallery [Los Angeles]
http://www.foundla.com

This Friday, join us at Raab Galerie [map] from 7-9pm for a night of surprises, introductions, and experimentation in West Berlin as we celebrate the opening of the month-long saga of the Joint Custody Project Berlin. The evening becomes a West-meets-East migration as the celebration continues late into the night at 103 Club [Kreuzberg - map], hosted by Discos Capablanca.

The Joint Custody Project landed in Berlin on the 1st of June 24 artists from all mediums were selected by curators Jonny Coleman and Chris Cruse, and paired off into 12 teams. Each team was tasked to create a cohesive piece of art -- without exchanging a single word. All the artists were given the same theme -- "You Can Never Go Home Again" -- to think about as they developed their pieces.

Each artist worked, back and forth, on the piece over the last four weeks without any verbal communication or knowledge of his/her partner's identity. Many tears were shed; much joy was shared. These pieces are more than end-products -- they are stories.

Join us on Friday for the exciting conclusion of the pieces, as they are revealed at the Raab Galerie. As an added treat, this will be the first time the artists will have the opportunity to meet. Come have a drink with us, enjoy the provocative art, participate in what will no doubt be the most exciting night of this project -- then stay out late with us.

Catch up with the madness online at
http://jointcustodyproject.blogspot.com

See you there
Jonny + Chris"

Post Titled: Google Democracy
at work when a Gurnseyman, a Welshman and an American cannot agree on the proper spelling of some word in the English language then we resort to what we call Google Democracy- that is; we Google all possible versions of the word and whichever comes up with the most Google search results wins.
EXAMPLE: INTILLS or INSTILS -??? BOTH ARE CORRECT! (who knew?!?)
Hypothetically, there is a (huge and gaping) weakness in this methodology- i.e. if about half of the people who write the word on the web spell it incorrectly, OR if the incorrect spelling returns MORE results than the correct spelling. Such a system could actually alter the way we spell words. (here's where I am once again reminded of the film Idiocracy, which most everyone agrees is a bad movie with a great premise, such a good premise in fact that it is somehow validated.)

Anyhow, on a similar vein (to Google democracy) I found this NY Times article: "What’s Obscene? Google Could Have an Answer" Dan sent this morning was particularly interesting - if follows a similar line of thinking/method... basically.

Post Titled: wundepunkte

We met a girl from Kyrgyzstan the other day, what was odd about that: from the getgo she figured out that my companion was American, and therefore he MUST know about the very important U.S. Military Base in Kyrgyzstan due to its strategic importance. Overhearing this I realized that I didn't know ANYTHING about Kyrgyztan OR the base so I was able to buffer my American ignorance of geography for the next hour as we spoke mostly German, (after all: why would a GERMAN know anything about a U.S. Base in Kyrgyzstan?) and somehow a German being ignorant of where and what the country was did not fulfill such a fat stereotype... then finally somehow my cover was blown. Or I just admitted to being American finally or something, can't remember.
this happens so often: I have cover, I value it, I protect it, and then somewhere along the way- whether it is hours or months -SOMETHING or someone blows my cover. Why is this important? Because being American these days comes with so much baggage, I just prefer to NOT enter a social situation where someone might make 2 dozen assumptions about me off the bat. Is this paranoid? Dunno. But, for example, when I have to climb over the little gang of Turkish teenagers -nice polite, decent guys- who hang out on my front stoop smoking hash, for some reason I do not want them to know who or what I am exactly. I just want to be a blank slate and build up a relationship with them on neutral ground... perhaps this stems from that day at the Ausländerbehorde (my first week back in Berlin) when I was helping the old Turkish man fill out his paperwork and he saw that I was from California and began yelling at me, see post: November 2006 "Berziksamt Bureaucratc Wonderland"
Perhaps I want to avoid something like that again... perhaps that instills doubt and fosters embarrassment for my naieve idealism...
Anyhow, whether I was American or not I could not hide the fact that I knew/know NOTHING about Kyrgistan. Nothing.

After one of the Euro Cup GAMES the topic of Europe's love and obsession with stereotyping its fellow EU countries came up. This happens. Why, I dunno. It is a scramble for identity in such a big glob of nationalities and people. Or, is it just same-old, same-old. Germans saying x about the Spanish who say y about the French who say z about the Polish. Hm. ho-hum.
On the flipside, though, there is more amazing integration and intermingling going on in the EU than ever before. I have met English girls dating Russian guys, Turkish guys dating Polish girls, and so on and so forth, really great.

Jonathan Zittrain* warns against the Internet. (my response: super antsy. squirming in chair. help.)
NOTE: Clearyl this guys ann idiot because I use the uinternet and Iä#m just fine and as far as I can tell the innternet is just fine, too. What's trhe fuss? Ok, clearly I am spending a lot of time on Comedy Central today, but Barack Obama's Vagina totally sucked me in... (reverse-birth style.)
So, the reason why I am posting this entry is that a few weeks ago we got a review copy of this book called The Future of the Internet and How to Stop It by Jonathan Zittrain, which sounded intriguing but I have not yet had time to read, THEN I noticed today that he was on the Colbert Report- hmm... maybe I don't have to read the book afterall... (oh, crap, is that why the internet is bringing on the apocalypse? or, at best: idiocracy? stay tuned. or tune out on YouTube or, rather, watch this video *(all joking aside, this guy kinda seems like a badass):
ok, and that is interrupted by a forced-detour pre-video ad to the Hancock site... enneybody think that is is a bit fugggin sketch that the only black superhero movie has to deal with a guy hooked on 40oz. malt liquor... or are we beyond all that now? Ok, ok- there was Spawn... whatever.

Post Subtitled: Just ranting here, move along, folks...

"At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." -John McCain.
Video by Public Service Administration.
Unfortunately, -in a a weird, removed sort of way- the fact that the word "cunt" has passed McCain's lips actually makes me like him more. (But that is only because I really didn't like him at ALL before... make any sense?) I wonder what kind of effect the YouTube video of this "cunt" incident might have on his image? Since it has already blown-up maybe... maybe the only response left is to stage and film a re-enactment! Surely that would be to their benefit, I mean, what does he have to lose? Heck- actually, it would be kind of brilliant for a candidate to stone-facedly re-enact all the moments of their life that they have been criticized for and/or which could be held against them- just get it all out fo the way in a lovely montage, then no one could hold any of those things against them because, of course, they just out-ed themselves in a comic way... i.e.: imagine: teen Barack on the beach in Hawai'i stoned out of his mind...
Oh, back on track here: other moral of the story:
the internet wins because it is not so censored... another amazing American double-standard. thanks Dan. These guys in the above video DO have a valid point, though. If you think about it---
In the coming years the FCC decency rules will probably have to crumble... right? I mean, the internet... just undoes these things... naturally. and when you have an upcoming generation who has googled "cisco adler's balls" because Sarah Silverman told them to on the MTV Music Awards, what the hell do four-letter words or boobs matter at that point? and STILL I really do love that fact that in Germany I can google "cisco adler's balls" at work and no one cares... not to tout this age-old anti-american/expat/study-abroad student line of Europe being so "liberated" or whatever, because in many ways Europe is quite unhealthily yet comfortably enslaved by social democracy and its banal fallout (dangerous? dangerous in the long-term?), BUT -nevertheless- I love how the Germans think nudity is just sort of funny and harmless. In the states I would probably have to go to gender-sensitivity gender training therapy after being fired... *blech* - I know, it is practically Neanderthal speak given what my current PC operating levels should be...
on that note there is a good post on a FISTFUL OF EUROS about... well, euro cup football. and the member-states freaking out about the EU. thanks again, Dan

It's only natural that this has led to an epidemic of Oranje fever in our country. ... saw the electronic duo MATMOS last night at festsaal kreuzberg, which is the first time I#d seen them since they opened and then played with Björk at the Frankfurt Opera house in 2001. I kind of expected some intense yet brilliant sonic blippy-burpy insanity, which from the very get-go it was definitely nuts, but very much on the calm end of nuts. not what I am used to when it comes to their music and me blasting the Civil War while jig-bouncing off the walls at home, but the show was actually very subdued, chilled, chaotic as their music tends to be - but defintiely not overwhelming or dancey. nevertheless, it was well worthwhile.

here is a video someone (German, actually) made using THE STRUGGLE AGAINST UNREALITY BEGINS (from THE CIVIL WAR, 2003) unfortunately it cuts off just as the song gets good-

Post Titled: MoveOn.org thinking: "Q: Who is a cool m&th§r*$%#er we can film putting the smack down on McCain?"
A: "John Cusack is a cool m&th§r*$%#er..."
- so I am glad to see him putting the smack down on McCain... but I think they've got it all wrong- they don't need you or me to doNATE $70,000 to put it on tv... it is already on YouTube, therefore viral, therefore far more powerful adn effective than television could ever be... They might just need $70,000 just for the heck of it, though.

(Il Casolare, 2nd half)
Post Titled TÜRKIYE! TÜRKIYE! TÜRKIYE! non-fiction June 11, 2008

the Spätkauf across the street from Weinblatt on Dieffenbach, 1st Half
türkei gegen die schweiz 2008 Turkey won against Switzerland in an amazing rain-drenched game, after which the entire neighborhood (well, actually more-accurately all of Kreuzberg and Neukölln) exploded for hours of celebration.
There were a dozen vans of riot police but people were most happy just driving between Kottbusser Tor and Hermannplatz hanging from car windows or out the sunroof with Turkish flags. Adalbertstraße was closed and there were just mobs jumping up and down, riding each others' shoulders and chanting "TÜRKIYE! TÜRKIYE! TÜRKIYE!"
The most adorable thing was an little round man with is two very small plump grandchildren just walking along the sidewalk up Kottbusser Damm all hand-in-hand, he proudly leading at the front carrying a Turkish flag, the children wobbling like ducklings, wide-eyed and overwhelmed at the hundreds of carhorns and yelling young people.

I loved the jusxtaposition of the Swiss flag and the Turkish flag... one being a bright red with a white cross and the other being the same bright red but with a star and moon. Anyhow- here are some video highlights

and some foto stills from the game set to Tarkan

I get off work an hour and a half early for the Germany EM spiel this evening... who are they playing?

Post Subtitled: information and abstraction...
things I realllly wannnaaa write about but no time (because I work full time and there is a football war goingon every evening), so so so I will toss them in the oven while the middle is still frozen::
the ever-changing forms of characters (?) in our lives- like (just to toss it out there): ... well, like: Batman. (click that word)
Batman has surfaced and re-surfaced a hundred times in a hundred ways - like the toy above- what is its relation to Adam West- OR that old Mexican Batman. (see below toy but there was also a filmed serial which I have only seen available on VHS) Or Keaton, Kilmer, Clooney, Bale and the half-dozen contemporary cartoons and dozens of comic/storylines... but...
nope... no time. point is: there is one word: Batman. but that one word has
with thousands of images and ideas attached to it, some much more prominent than others...

Post Subtitled: "DOH!" -H.Simpson
non-fiction quote from a conversation last week: "... Germany is, well, clueless. It doesn't even know when it is being racially insensitive.... and... Actually- overall, this sort of unwitting racism is basically just a fact of life in Europe"
yep... I could be totally wrong, totally off-the-mark with this... BUT just when you think... that some progress might be progress-ing here on the continent... due to lack of wince-inducing incidents in recent memory) THEN ...some (one would assume) well-educated, worldy people go an' sit around a table and think that this is actually a really good idea:

Post Titled: alles gut.

been on hiatus because I have bronchitis, the doctor's office waiting room had an open balcony so life isn't so bad, reading the last few pages of I am Charlotte Simmons in the sun.

IRON MAN at the freiluftkino in volkspark hasenheide was good. it was the Deutsche Fassung (DF), not the Original Version (OV) or even the Original mit Untertitel (OmU - my favorite), but it worked... corporate social responisibity and the Dude vs. Terry Crabtree fighting in robot suits...

döner kebabs are good. they are also spelled kebap... after watching Prinzessinnenbad again I was trying to figure out where önder döner was and came across this article in deutsche welle- quite informative.
kiez biiiatch. gotta love those Prinzessinnenbad girls (think one works at cafe/bar hannibal or that mexican place by görlitzer now) but, if for no other reason, they did/have expanded my vocab -taking it on some interesting detours. "ach, du kleine misgeburt" and of course the immortal "ick komme aus kreuzberg, du muschi!"

fleet foxes
are good, they play tonight at cafe zapata with Josh Tillman of ye olde 411 house days on drums. nuts.
at cafe zapata - Oranienburger Str. 54
10117 Berlin, Germany

(says it starts at 8, but that is highly unlikely, I#d say earliest 9:30)
hopefully they are as catchy and fun live as not.

the badeschiff is really good. really really good. much better that the Prinzessinnenbad (the pool, not the movie) aven if it is a Meatmarket (German co-worker wrote "meetmarket" cute!) (& even if you can't bring your own drinks.)

Post Titled: never downloading that again.

watched My Blueberry Nights with Mr. Goldmann and Ms. Pilarska last night. It sucked. Was it the fact that it was in english? Is Wong Kar Wai just better in Chinese? Do we lost something when it is normalized, de-mystified and boiled down to a tasteless pasty version of a deadfish English language??? (don't get me wrong, I love English, but not when these actors were speaking it. it was kitsch) Ugh. the only good thing about it was Rachel Weisz (sp?) otherwise: dumb, pointless, pretty colours... uhm... pointless, dumb.
